This super simple mini is a weird favorite of mine. I had to run an encounter with a large air elemental in it and decided the day before to make this guy from some bits I had lying around. His derpy face is so awful I love it. While I honestly didn't expect him to last, he is still in his shape on my desk, too stubborn to fall to the ravages of time and gravity.
Steps:
1) Pull apart your cotton ball(s) and shape them into a vaguely humanoid shape with an indent in the bottom for the bottlecap. Spray the cotton with hairspray to hold it in place.
*Crafter's Note*
Hairspray will make your fingertips stick which is no good for molding cotton. Make sure to get a minimal amount on your hands as you go. You can also use wooden popsicle sticks or toothpicks to help with the shaping to avoid finger contact.
2) Glue the bottlecap top to the base of your cotton elemental. Make sure the cotton covers the metal entirely. The size of your cap will determine the size of the elemental. For a 1 inch by 1 inch grid, I use beer bottle caps for medium sized creatures and growler sized bottle caps for large sized creatures like my elemental.
3) (Optional) paint a face onto the cotton. As a note, cotton is not a great surface to paint so expect wonderfully derpy results.
4) Finish the whole thing with some more hairspray to combat gravity like a 60's hairdo.
